Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
